So it is 4 days till my 30th birthday. I will officially not be in my 20′s anymore. So a month or so ago I decided to start thinking about everything I have done before my 30th birthday. I thought I would post the list to make some kind of physical record of it all.  Most of it really occurred since I turned 18, so in the past 12 years, but yeah.

  • Lived in 3 different states (California, Arizona, and Arkansas), actually moved over 10 times
  • Traveled out of the country (Toulouse, France and Cologne, Germany) – yes both were for work
  • Graduated high school, college and got my PhD in Space and Planetary Sciences
  • Married my high school sweetheart at the Fairmont Hotel in SF
  • Had two beautiful little girls
  • Applied to be an astronaut (yes am one of the over 6300 applicants for the astronaut candidate program for 2013)
  • Worked at NASA, the USGS, SETI, oh and Hot Topic
  • Have never had any debt – Thank you parents for your support, my undergraduate education, and my first car
  • I have been active with my sorority for over 10 years and am currently an advisor for the UC Berkeley chapter

And not such big accomplishments:

  • I have been to Disneyland 7 times and Disney World once
  • I have watched every episode of Stargate, Gilmore Girls, and Buffy at least twice
  • I am 3 episodes away from seeing all of Smallville
  • I still have not finished the costume I started making for Halloween my Freshman year of college
  • I have owned every major game console in the past 10 years and have never finished a single game (oh and I still own a working ATARI 2600)

If I think of anything else but Thursday I just might add it to the list.

This is gonna get me laid.

Ok well probably not but one can hope. Yes it is that time of year when people shove each other and get in fights over silly looking flowers and pounds of sugar. (mmmm, suger)
And that’s alright. I was talking to a friend about it and got the now usual tale about how it’s such a made up holiday and you shouldn’t need an excuse to express your love for someone. Which is true…

however…

I am now an old married guy. One who spends too much time on the train writing blog posts while going to his job. One who doesn’t get to spend nearly enough time with his wife. (or kids) And one who does actually appreciate a day on his calendar where he can remember to take that extra time and remind his wife about how much he loves her.
Remind her
about how beautiful she is
about how awesome a mother she ie
about how she can still make me feel all gitty as a school boy
about how cool she is for actually laughing at very terrible jokes.
about how she is wonderful for caring about me
and last but never in the least about how amazing she is as a person. (cough, astronaut, cough)

See what I did there (points up). Those be some good brownie points. ( you know, for geting laid)

So for a made up holiday I think I did pretty good. I bought her a gift of a teen chick flick about vampires. (and got dirty looks for buying it in the store) Will probably have to watch it with her too.
Got her some sugar.
Probably not going to get her flowers. Did take the kids for a weekend.

(I sooo should get laid for this…)

I love you Katie.

(sorry for all the getting liad references)

Big Hugs :-P

Ok, so I stole the title for this post, but I modified it a bit. Recently Kelly Wels posted about how Even The Most Devoted Cloth Diaper Moms Experience Burnout.  Now I have to agree with her that when it comes to cloth diapering, no matter what at some point you will consider using disposables.  I will be honest that I use disposables when we travel.  None of our trips have ever left us with easy access to a washing machine.  I will also admit that I have used some in between when I was a bit late in doing diaper laundry.  So yes it happens, but I do cloth diaper most of the time.

But that isn’t what this post is really about.  This time around it is about making baby food.  With Tara I made all her baby food.  She never had a bite of jarred baby food.  Even when we traveled I brought food or made it there. This time around I have finally slipped.  So Norah had a really bad cold and her appetite dropped.  Then just as she was getting better she got another bug that kept her appetite down.  Nicely she was nursing still really well, but she wasn’t wanting to eat much in solids.  Since she wasn’t eating much, I wasn’t replenishing my stash in the freezer of lovely purees.  Well she finally is back to eating and well, I was pretty much out of baby food and had no time to make any.  So I sent Sam out to get a couple of jars to make it for the next day.

Well, then there is our upcoming trip.  We are leaving in 9 days for Germany.  Traveling internationally we will be using jarred baby food.  I have given into that decision, since we won’t have access to a kitchen to make anything while we are there, and well I just can’t easily travel with that much homemade food.  Now through research (i.e. my online Mommy Group), I have figured out a good brand of food to buy while we are there (Hipp baby food).  It is organic, has fairly normal sounding combinations of food, and is available in markets not far from our hotel.  Oh and thank you google translator for letting me understand all that is on the website.

But there is still 9 days before we leave.  I will be honest that I have given in and bought jarred food for this time.  Between needing to prepare for my talk in Germany (yes this trip is actually for work), packing for Germany, oh yeah and taking care of the girls, I don’t have a lot of free time this week.  So yes, I am experiencing some baby food making burnout.  I do plan to continue my baby food making when we return.  The cost alone is a big incentive, but it is just nice to know that I know just what is going into my daughter at this early time in her life.

I know it has been way too long since I have updated. Sam has posted, but not me. But overall life is good. I will be happy when I have no sick kids at home. Speaking of sick kids, Norah has a cold and has been fighting sleep this afternoon. I tried to see if some cuddling would help but she crawled off of me. Instead she did this:
